The primary responsibility of a cabin crew member is to ensure the safety of passengers, crew, the aircraft and its equipment. Their duties would include assisting passengers in an emergency evacuation which could take place on land or in water, cabin fires, which could occur in a toilet, overhead stowage, under the seat, in galleys etc. and survival procedures in the event of an emergency situation. Crew are also trained to deal with problems as serious as heart attacks, child birth, and choking to lesser issues such as a bleeding nose, headaches and nausea. You will be required to recognise and handle all emergency situations which could occur on board an aircraft.
The training requirements for licensing of a cabin crew member are laid down by the South African Civil Aviation Authority. These requirements demand a high level of knowledge expertise by crew members.
Licensing training will prepare you to effectively handle all emergency situations which could occur. This training normally takes place over approximately 6 weeks and broad spectrums of modules are covered. These modules include:
- General Safety
- Security e.g. dealing with disruptive passengers, hijacking and sabotage
- Aircraft type training – DC-9
- Operating emergency systems and equipment
- Dangerous Goods
- Crew Resource Management
- Fire Fighting
- Wet and Dry Ditching
- Aviation Medicine
A large number of the practical drills are performed solo for assessment purposes.
The more time spent on an aircraft while undergoing training – the better – as this allows training to take place in a lifelike environment.
Licensed crew members are required to update their safety qualifications annually. This training is known as recurrent training.
